Why Patio Joints Fail
Patio repointing, sometimes called regrouting, means taking out deteriorated jointing between the paving and replacing it. It's the repair that stops a patio looking worn long after the slabs themselves are fine.
Weathering and age
Rain, frost and years of use gradually break down jointing material until it cracks, crumbles or washes out.
Weeds and moss in the joints
Growth in open joints widens the gaps and loosens what's left, so failed joints tend to keep getting worse.
Dirt hiding the problem
A grubby patio can hide joints that were already failing. Cleaning often shows what's really there.
Movement or poor original jointing
Slight ground movement, or jointing that wasn't well filled or suited to the paving, can lead to early failure.
Repointing repairs the joints, not the ground beneath. If the slabs themselves are loose or sinking, we'll tell you what we see rather than repoint over the problem.
How We Repoint a Patio
A neat, lasting-looking joint comes down to preparation. This is how we approach it.
- 1
A free site visit
We look over the paving and the joints, check whether repointing is worthwhile and recommend the right approach for your patio.
- 2
Remove the failed jointing
Loose, cracked and missing material is taken out of the joints, so the new jointing has something sound to bond to.
- 3
Clean and prepare
The joints and surface are cleaned and prepared. If the patio needs cleaning too, we can include it in the same job.
- 4
Repoint and finish
We refill the joints with suitable jointing compound in the colour you've chosen and finish them neatly. We'll tell you when the patio can be used again.
Send a few photos first if you'd like a rough idea. We then visit, free of charge, so the quote is accurate.

Why Proper Repointing Matters
- ✓A finished look. Full, crisp joints are what make a patio look cared for, not just clean.
- ✓Fewer weeds and less moss. Fresh jointing helps keep growth out of the gaps between the paving.
- ✓Paving held in place. Properly filled joints help keep slabs and edges firm and tidy.
- ✓An accurate quote. We visit free of charge and inspect the joints before we quote, so you know what's involved.
Cleaning and Repointing Work Best Together
Joints need to be clean before new jointing goes in, and a clean patio shows off the finish properly. If the paving also needs cleaning before the joints are replaced, see our professional patio cleaning service. We can quote the clean and the repoint together.

Patio Repointing Questions
How do you quote for patio repointing?
Send your postcode and a few photos and we can give you a rough idea. We then visit, free of charge, to inspect the joints and the paving, so the quote we give you is accurate.
How long does patio repointing last?
It depends on the paving, the jointing used, how exposed the patio is and whether the ground moves. We don't promise a set lifespan, but we'll talk through what to expect for your patio when we visit.
Can you repoint a patio after pressure washing?
Yes. Cleaning often shows which joints have failed, so repointing after cleaning is common. The joints do need to be clean and prepared first, and we can quote the clean and the repoint together.
Do old patio joints need to be completely removed?
Failed, loose or crumbling jointing needs to come out so the new material can bond properly. Sound jointing can sometimes stay. We'll check at the visit and tell you what's needed.
What colour patio jointing should I choose?
We offer Neutral Buff, Mid-Grey, Basalt and Black. As a guide, lighter and warmer tones suit sandstone, while darker finishes suit porcelain and darker stone. See the jointing colours above, and we'll recommend one for your paving when we assess it.
Can you repoint sandstone and porcelain patios?
Yes. We repoint sandstone, porcelain and other paving. The right jointing depends on the paving, so we choose the most suitable professional jointing system for the job.
Does a patio need cleaning before repointing?
The joints and surface need to be clean and prepared before repointing. If the patio is also green or grubby, cleaning it first gives the best finish. See our patio cleaning page, or ask us to quote both together.
