How Often Should You Clear Your Gutters?

Gutters are easy to forget until water starts spilling over. Here's how often to clear them and the signs it's overdue.

A simple rule

Most homes benefit from gutter clearance at least once a year, and twice if you have trees nearby. Autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is the most popular time, because that's when gutters fill fastest.

Signs your gutters need clearing

Water spilling over the edge in heavy rain, streaks down the wall below the gutter, plants or weeds growing from the run, visible moss or leaves at the edge, and water pooling or draining slowly.

Homes near trees need it more often

Overhanging branches drop leaves, seeds and twigs straight into the gutter. If you have trees close to the house, clearing more than once a year keeps everything flowing.

What gutter clearance involves

We clear leaves, moss and debris from inside your gutters and check the downpipe outlets. You can add exterior washing of the gutters, fascias and soffits for a complete, crisp roofline. See our gutter clearance page.

Quick Questions

Can I clear gutters myself?

You can, but it means ladders and awkward reach. A professional clearance is safer and gets right into the run.

Should gutters be cleared after a storm?

If you notice overflowing or debris after heavy weather, it's worth getting them checked.

Does roof moss affect my gutters?

Yes. Moss from the roof drops into the gutters and can build up there. Roof cleaning tackles it at the source. See roof cleaning.
